Sunday Evening Salon series, and fundraising for LLS -- January 2025

In store event series celebrating DC culture and history.

In-Store Events:

The Sunday Evening Salon series

Beginning in March, Mojomala is hosting a series of in-store events centered on Washington DC history and culture. The Sunday Evening Salon is in honor of Mary Ternes, a family friend and long-time librarian in the Washingtoniana department (now part of the People’s Archive) at the Martin Luther King, Jr. public library.

Mary spent her career archiving and preserving DC history. The series is our way to both recognize her achievements and to highlight a few of the ways that our community is special.

Our first three sessions are penciled in, and we intend to add one or two more to close out the summer with June’s focus being on Go-Go music. Here’s what we’ve lined up so far:

  • SUNDAY, MARCH 9 — George Pelecanos, author and a producer/writer for HBO’s “The Wire,” will talk about Washington as a literary location and will touch on what the Washingtoniana department meant to him.

  • SUNDAY, APRIL 13 — Assoc. Professor Maurice Jackson from Georgetown University will discuss his new book, “Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience: How Black Washingtonians Used Music and Sports in the Fight for Equality."

  • SUNDAY, MAY 18 — Blair Ruble, distinguished fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, will speak on May 18 about the Washington Theater Club.

Each session will be held Sunday at 5pm and is expected to run 45-to-60 minutes. Space will be limited so reservations may be required. We will provide further details in next month’s email, social media and in the shop.

Presidents’ Weekend to benefit LLS

Mojomala is proudly supporting our friend Olivia Kong in her efforts to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I met with Olivia a few months ago and was inspired to help her with this cause which is in honor of Kevin Palafox, her 2023 volleyball coach at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.

So to advance Olivia’s goals, for Presidents’ Weekend (Feb. 15 & Feb. 16), a portion of all in-store sales at Mojomala will go toward her fundraising goal.

Olivia’s efforts are part of the LLS’ 2025 Student Visionaries of the Year program. If you’d like to learn more about Olivia’ fundraiser, and about LLS, please visit Olivia’s page on the LLS website.
