Update on Jim Saah & J. Robbins, Media & Makers Market and new Mojomala t-shirts!
Sunday, Oct. 20, Noon-7pm:
MOJO BRANCH Media & Makers Market
It should be perfect weather Sunday afternoon for our first media and makers market at the Silver Spring Metro Plaza, co-hosted by Silver Branch brewery and Mojomala (me). Swing by and help us support local independent artists, vintage sellers, comics creators and vinyl dealers.
There will be two areas of vendors on the plaza: seven vendors in the main plaza space we’re calling “Vinyl Village,” and seven more vendors in front of Mojomala’s storefront in a spot we dubbed “Comics Alley.” Both areas have more than vinyl and comics, so be sure to check each spot to find that one-of-kind gift or a must-have treasure for your own collection.
DJs, the Monster City IPA and concert giveaways
In addition to our vendors, we’ve lined up four talented DJs to keep your energy up throughout the day. Spinning vinyl for us are DJs RockActivo, Live Action Mixtape, SamG, and R We On The Air?!
While perusing the vendors and enjoying the music, make a point to sample Silver Branch’s latest diabolically delicious concoction: the Monster City Imperial IPA! This 9% ABV pint of hoppy goodness is being released Sunday so you can be one of the first to rave about it to your friends.
And finally, Mojomala will have not one, not two, but THREE concert giveaways to the following upcoming shows:
- B-52s on Oct. 31 at the Anthem
- Ratboys on Nov. 12 at the Atlantic
- Slowdive on Nov. 17 at the Anthem
Jim Saah and J. Robbins in store Nov. 9
As mentioned last month, photographer Jim Saah and musician/producer J. Robbins will visit the shop on Saturday, Nov. 9. Jim will present a slide show and talk about his extraordinary book, “In My Eyes: Photographs 1982-1997” (now in its second printing). Along with copies of the book, we’ll have prints available for purchase.
And following Jim’s talk, J. Robbins will perform a set drawing from his latest Dischord album “Basilisk.” (https://jrobbins.bandcamp.com/album/basilisk) J. has played a critical role in the DC music scene both as a musician (Jawbox, Office Of Future Plans, J. Robbins Band) and as a producer (Magpie Cage Recording Studio).
Mojomala t-shirts are here!
I’m really happy with the quality of the job done by Takoma Park’s DC Shirt and Press (https://www.instagram.com/dcshirtandprint/) . If you need anything printed, I highly recommend them. We have three colors to choose from (mustard, thyme and citron) and several sizes from small to 2XL. The shirts are $22 and will be available Sunday at Mojo Branch and then online at mojomala.com.
As for my drawing for the shirt, I wanted to show what makes Mojomala special to me, which is specifically all of you! Thank you for supporting us!
(I should note, too, that the style of the drawing is inspired by New Yorker cover artist Adrian Tomine, so a tip of the cap to him.)
Black Friday RSD is happening
Finally, just a quick note that Mojomala is participating in Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on Nov. 29. We have placed our order though we won’t know exactly what we’ll receive for a few more weeks. Look for more details in the next newsletter and on Instagram.
