In-Store Event:
Lucy Dacus Listening Get-together
Mojomala is hosting a fun listening event for Lucy Dacus fans on Friday, March 28 at 6pm. Come by the shop to hear Lucy’s latest album “Forever Is A Feeling,” and have a chance to win a signed insert! In addition to the album itself, we’ll also have posters and tote bags (free with purchase while supplies last), plus other Lucy-themed goodies. Email us and let us know if you plan to attend the Lucy Dacus Listening Event, and if you’re hoping to purchase the vinyl, CD or cassette. This will help us with ordering enough copies in the proper formats.
Record Store Day: News & Tix Contest
We are four Saturdays away until RECORD STORE DAY! Mojomala will have a sizable selection this year, though there likely will be limited quantities of each title. Thank you to everyone who submitted a title request; it definitely helped to know what folks are on the hunt for. I haven’t received my allotment yet, but will share the list as soon as I have it, both on mojomala.com and on Instagram (@mojomala01) and BlueSky (@mojomala).
Here are a few details on what to expect on RSD:
- We plan to open at 9am on Saturday, April 12. As this is a first-come, first-serve event, you may want to line up early. How early? I can’t say but last year we had people in line by 7:30am.
- There’s a limit of one copy of a particular title per person for the morning, just to keep things fair. At Noon, we’ll remove that restriction.
- Please do not save spots for people in line: it kind of sucks to wait for an hour or more only to see someone join a friend at the last moment.
In addition to the RSD offerings, you can enter for a chance to win a pair of tickets to Grace Jones & Janelle Monae at the Anthem on June 5! This contest is open only to those of you who come by on Record Store Day, so make a point of visiting us that Saturday if you want a chance to win. We’ll announce the winner around 3pm in the shop (you do not have to be present to win but it would be cool if you were).
In-Store Event:
Author Maurice Jackson & the Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience
Our Sunday Evening Salon series on Washingtoniana continues April 13 with Assoc. Professor Maurice Jackson from Georgetown University. Dr. Jackson will discuss his new book, “Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience: How Black Washingtonians Used Music and Sports in the Fight for Equality."
The book, released last month by Georgetown University Press, tells the story of DC musicians and athletes who have used their skills and their determination to achieve success in the face of discrimination, and features pioneers such as James Reese Europe, Duke Ellington and John Thompson Jr.
This event begins at 5pm on Sunday, April 13, and is free to attend, though space is limited.
The Sunday Evening Salon is in honor of Mary Ternes, a family friend and long-time librarian in the Washingtoniana department (now part of the People’s Archive) at the Martin Luther King, Jr. public library. Mary spent her career archiving and preserving DC history. The series is our way to both recognize her achievements and to highlight a few of the ways that our community is special.
