Sunday, September 14 @ 5pm:
10 Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro
Georgetown University professor, author and Mojomala friend Bryan McCann returns to the shop on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 5pm to talk about his just-released book, “Ten Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro."
What do nineteenth-century fiction, early twentieth-century popular music, 1930s soccer, 1950s film comedy, 1960s experimental art and 1970s soap operas have in common with one another? Each reveal the deep patterns structuring social and cultural life in Rio de Janeiro. Bringing a fresh perspective to one of the most visited cities in South America, Ten Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro explores each manifestation in turn, mining their depths and drawing connections between artistic movements and political and economic transitions.
Joined by moderator Victoria Broadus, Bryan will discuss the city’s boundless creativity and contradictions, and show how it has been continually remade by newcomers, strivers, and tricksters.
Thanks Phoenix!
Mojomala’s summer staffer Phoenix Gault-Brown is heading back to Wesleyan University and I just wanted to take a moment to thank him for his fine work and friendly demeanor. His last day is this Sunday, Aug. 17, so please wish him well if you visit the shop this weekend.
