10 Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro, Sabrina Carpenter Listening Party
Sunday, September 14 @ 5pm:
10 Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro
Georgetown University professor, author and Mojomala friend Bryan McCann returns to the shop THIS SUNDAY (Sept. 14), at 5pm to talk about his just-released book, “Ten Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro."
What do nineteenth-century fiction, early twentieth-century popular music, 1930s soccer, 1950s film comedy, 1960s experimental art and 1970s soap operas have in common with one another? Each reveal the deep patterns structuring social and cultural life in Rio de Janeiro. Bringing a fresh perspective to one of the most visited cities in South America, Ten Moments That Shaped Rio de Janeiro explores each manifestation in turn, mining their depths and drawing connections between artistic movements and political and economic transitions.
Joined by moderator Victoria Broadus, Bryan will discuss the city’s boundless creativity and contradictions, and show how it has been continually remade by newcomers, strivers, and tricksters.
This event is free to attend, and parking is free on Sundays at the county lot one block from the shop at the intersection of Cameron Street & 2nd Avenue.
Thanks To Our Sabrina Carpenter Fans
Laura and I really enjoyed our last listening party to celebrate Sabrina Carpenter’s new album, “Man’s Best Friend.” Thanks to everyone who joined us!
For those who may not know, a listening party is an informal gathering to celebrate a recent release from a particular artist. We’ll play their record in its entirety while you hang out with fellow fans. These parties are coordinated by the record labels, artists and the fine people at Record Store Day, and often include some cool giveaways such as posters, stickers and, in Sabrina’s case, a slipmat for your turntable.
We’ll announce upcoming listening parties either in this email or on Instagram (@mojomala01).
The Latest Cool Stuff At Mojomala
Activity Books For Adults
Mojomala is all about analog amusements, and we’ve recently discovered Boredwalk’s line of somewhat snarky and super-satisfying activity books.
Whether you pick up Adventures In The Abyss, Bloodthirsty & Bewitched, or Whatever! An Activity Book For 90s Kids, you'll find a collection of word searches, math puzzles, word jumbles, mazes, trivia, logic puzzles, and much more, all with a dark-humored edge to them.
As their ad campaigns notes, “they’re like Highlights magazines for adults.”
Known for their witty and often dark humor blended with expertly crafted original graphics, Boredwalk is an artist-owned brand with a cult following out of Los Angeles.
